What is bankhead courts?

Bankhead Courts was a low-income public housing development located in Atlanta, Georgia. It was built in the 1940s and was home to many African American residents. The development consisted of several low-rise apartment buildings and housed over 1,000 people.

Bankhead Courts was known for high levels of crime, poverty, and social problems. The area struggled with issues such as drug activity, gang violence, and limited access to resources and opportunities for residents.

In the early 2000s, the Atlanta Housing Authority began a redevelopment project to demolish Bankhead Courts and replace it with a mixed-income community. The redevelopment plan aimed to provide better housing options, services, and amenities for residents while also revitalizing the surrounding neighborhood.

The demolition of Bankhead Courts began in 2011, and the new mixed-income community, known as Columbia at Mechanicsville Crossing, was completed in 2017. The redevelopment project aimed to create a more sustainable and vibrant community for residents, with a focus on providing affordable housing options and improving quality of life.
